Beautiful Sangeetha in Sari

It was a hot day in April when I met up with Sangeetha and her husband for her maternity photo shoot. Sangeetha had told me she would be wearing a Sari for the shoot, which I thought was really special. Among all the Indian clients I had worked with, she is the first to wear a Sari for the shoot.

On the day itself, as expected, Sangeetha was looking lovely in her Sari, but the unexpected was the small stool she had brought along. When I saw her husband, I understood why. Sangeetha’s husband is a very tall man, he is even taller than I am ( I am somewhat like a lamp post among my peers).

Taking the stool along, we explored the Singapore Botanic Garden and its beauty under the morning sun.

Cutie-pie Natalie

I just met this 4 months-old cutie-pie Natalie in late April. She is so bubbly and chubby. When you look at her for the first time, you will have an urge to pinch her cheeks.

While shooting halfway, Natalie began to get cranky and needed some milk to pacify her. While I was waiting for her to finish her milk, I decided to continue taking photos of her older brother as he is still not very comfortable in front of the camera. I guess my decision paid off because the later photos turned out a lot better.

Maternity Photography as a Celebration

Celebrating the coming of a new baby in the family can be done in many different ways and one of these is through maternity photography. Having a new baby in the family is an event that should be celebrated since not all people are blessed with a baby. As mentioned, there are various ways to welcome a new born but starting the celebration with pregnancy photography is something very unique.

One way of celebrating pregnancy through maternity photoshoot is to invite the whole family and take a family portrait. Pregnancy photography usually involves a solo shot of the soon-to-be mother as the subject while highlighting her bump. Although this could also symbolize the celebration, it is more enjoyable to see the whole family celebrating with the future mom. The whole drama of the shot will depend on the various poses of every member of the family. However, the highlight of the photo still centers to the mother-to-be and her little one.

Aside from inviting the whole family in the set, another way of capturing this beautiful moment is by centering the story to the future mother and father. A peaceful photo of the expecting mother and her hubby with the baby inside the tummy is a very emotional yet captivating photo to look at. To symbolize the celebration, there are different ways on how this setup can be shot. One option is where the upcoming parents show their joy by holding the bump and look at each other while smiling. This pose can be a little dramatic but the overall feel of the photo can show how the couple celebrates the coming of their baby. Another option is where both parents look at the bump to show their excitement and eagerness to meet the new bundle of joy.

Celebrating pregnancy should not stop with how the photo is taken. Placing the photograph in an ordinary photo frame is just plain. To represent the celebration through these photos, choosing the right frame is also a crucial step since the latter should match with the photo’s theme. If it is a family portrait with full of colors, the frame should look something fun to complement the colors of the picture. On the other hand, if the photo has more lighting drama or is taken black and white, the look of the frame should be something more serious.

There are more other ways to celebrate pregnancy through this photography. One should just have the passion to perfectly execute all details of the maternity photography.

Project Give

One may wonder what “Project Give” is all about. “Project Give” is started by Rae, who wanted to pay it forward after being blessed with tons of kindness her family received while taking care of her child with special needs, especially from the staff of KK Hospital. I had the privilege to know Rae last year, and volunteered my photography services after being inspired by her.

During a charity event photo shoot with Yong How (my colleague from TOP Photography who is also the founder of ‘3 Little Pic’), we met up with Rae who came up with the idea of having photos taken for families with children of special needs. We loved the idea and after much planning, we had the chance to do so for 3 families early this year.

Sad to say, one of the child passed away last week. Our only comfort is that we helped preserve some fond memories of him for his family to remember him by. We offer our deepest condolences to the family.

The experience has got us to slow down our pace and look at what is the meaning to life. Life is unpredictable, treasure your loved ones, treasure your good fortune and health, not forgetting those who are in need and could use a helping hand.

Baby Julian

We are honored for the chance to create photo memories of 2 babies that were born on Christmas day of 2012. They are as special as the day itself.

View pictures of Baby Harry here.

The photo shoot for Baby Julian was arranged on the 2nd day of 2013. He is the first Caucasian baby that gave an auspicious kickstart to our year. (Thank you for being our successful showcase!)

Looking at the photos, one probably can’t tell what happened behind the scenes. It’s one of the most challenging shoot we had done so far, stretching our ideas on how to portray the best side of baby Julian who has got his own character at this tender age. He was exceptionally active and can’t be left alone for more than a few minutes. It was not easy but our patience paid off eventually.

Other than the photo results, it’s also satisfying to receive good clients’ comments that makes all this work worthwhile. A comment left by Eugénie (Julian’s mum) “Although Julian was not cooperative all the time you certainly were able to shoot some nice photos”.

Top 3 Challenges during Family Photography Session

Having family portraits taken has been a practice that’s been around for a number of centuries now. What was once a privilege of the aristocratic families in the past, is now a tradition for countless families all over the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re part of a big brood or just a small family of three. Family portraits make the perfect memento to keep through the years.

Although taking the family photo may seem like an easy task, you’ll be amazed by the number of different factors that come into play just to be able to create the perfect shot. If you think family photography is easy, you might want to think again. Here are just some of the challenges that family portrait photographers have to deal with when taking family photos.

Composition
One of the challenges of taking good family photos is figuring out the right composition of your family photo. You need to compose the shot in a manner that will not only engage the viewer, but look aesthetically balanced as well. One foolproof technique that many photographers use is to position family members in an imaginary triangle to naturally draw the viewers’ eyes into the photo.

Poses
Another challenge that many photographers face when taking good family photography is finding the right pose. Sometimes it can be quite difficult to get people to pose in a way that doesn’t look stiff or staged. Don’t be afraid to play around with creative poses and you might just get a winning shot.

Cooperation from everyone
Lastly, there’s also the issue of getting everyone to cooperate, especially when there are young children involved in the shoot. Let’s face it, it can be quite stressful having to deal with young children in a photo shoot as it takes a special kind of photographer to get them to smile and laugh with everyone in the photo. The only way that you can get through this challenge is be patient and maybe have a few tricks under your sleeve. Go out of your way to make your subjects feel more comfortable during the photo shoot and cooperation is sure to follow.

Trying to capture the perfect family moment can have some very interesting turns, but once you see the final product, you’ll then realize that all that hard work was worth it. Look up helpful hints from professional photographers to learn more on how different photography styles. With enough practice and a bit of creative thinking, you’ll be shooting family photography like a pro in no time.

Christmas Baby Harry Martin V

Wendy contacted me a few days before her delivery date. She wanted to have her baby’s photos professionally taken to keep as momento and also as an extra touch on the banner and cake cards for the full month celebration.

The photo-shoot was arranged on the first day of 2013. What a great way to start the new year, with such a chubby and cute new born as my subject. Baby Harry was so cooperative throughout the shoot, letting me pose him with ease.

Maternity Photography Singapore – Slim Mama

I was contacted by Even to do her maternity shoot in December last year. Initially she had concerns that her home is messy and not interesting as a photo location. I managed to change her view to see that each home presents its own unique character and is full of photography potential. Majority of people are able to relax and be comfortable in their home surroundings, in addition to the convenience of props and image changes.

When I first met her, I was surprised that she was still so slim despite being late in her 32 weeks. While she was doing her makeup, I chatted with her husband, Kian Leong. He showed me their family photos, which were detailed with date, location taken as well as storyline. The love and effort that was put into the photos touched me. I can be assured that the photos that I took for them will be treasured as precious memories in years to come.

Baby Photography Singapore – Handling an Upset Baby during Shoot

In today’s digital age, you no longer have to worry about not having enough film for all the shots you want. You also no longer have to worry about saving shots and other worries of the past. Today, you can take as many shots of your son or daughter as you wish in his many moods. Unfortunately though, not all the pictures you take are great enough to share.

If you want professional looking pictures, you need the help of photographers who know their trade, those specializing in baby photography. Search online and browse their newborn photography works. Once you have chosen the company you want, let the photographer get the perfect shots you desire.

A child’s disposition on the day of the shoot decides the output or pictures to be had. A happy baby will most often result in happy pictures. On the other hand, a baby having a bad day may be ornery and uncooperative throughout his session. There are ways though of handling an upset baby during a shoot. Some baby photography tips for such instances are given below for your reference and appreciation:

Tip #1: Work with him when he is ready. Allow the baby to be familiar with his surroundings and the photographer. He may just be feeling unsure and needs to be reassured that he will not be harmed. The place should be conducive to bringing out the best in your little one. When he is ready, you can begin.

Tip #2: Give the baby what he needs. If the child is hungry, allow him to drink his milk first until he is ready to having his pictures taken. If he is looking for familiar objects as a teething toy or a baby ball, give this to him. Once distracted, he may be persuaded to have his picture taken.

Tip #3: Keep mommy within his sight. A mother’s presence is always a secure sight for babies. Keep mommy within easy reach to assure him that she is there when he needs her. Babies are more confident with their parents around. A mother for example can coax her little one to smile for her and get exactly the reaction she wants.

Handling your upset baby during a shoot will be easier in time. Experience after all teaches you what to do. So learn from the past and apply all that you have learned in the future.

Maternity Photography Singapore – Daring Mama from Bulgaria

Maya was one of the few names that left an impression when I was contacted. Its not just because the name is unique, it’s also the name of the 3D animation software that I wanted to learn a long ago.

Maya is from Bulgaria, and her husband Thilo is from Germany. While waiting for the makeup to be done, I had a chat with Thilo. Through the conversation, I got to know how they met, and where their wedding was held. They also shared their wedding photos taken in Germany.

During the photoshoot, Maya wanted to have a similar shot that I had done for Cheryl (who was featured in the New Paper). She had seen Cheryl’s photo and really loved it. I was concerned at first as Maya was already in her 38th week and to do that pose can be very challenging for her. And yet she did it without any hesitation. Bravo! 🙂
